1785 COPPER Nova Constellatio Copper, Pointed Rays, Large Date MS64 Brown NGC. Crosby 3-B, W-1895, R.2. 103.6 grains. This boldly detailed copper has lovely olive and chocolate-brown color with noticeable faded mint red on each side. The glossy surfaces display hints of cobalt-blue toning that enhances the eye appeal. Coined on a slightly undersize planchet with no visible border details. Minor die crumbling is evident in the wreath over 178 on this intermediate die state example. Later states have advanced die defects in the wreath. The 1785 Crosby 3-B is the most available of the Nova Constellatio coppers in Mint State grades: an excellent type candidate. The Eric P. Newman coin is one of four that NGC has graded MS64 Brown, the finest they have examined. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
