Description 1854 G$1 Type Two MS61 NGC. CAC. In the middle of 1854, James Longacre redesigned the gold dollar from a Liberty to Indian Head motif, and the coin was made broader and thinner. This caused striking difficulties, and consequently heavily-clashed examples are frequently seen. The production approaching 800,000 pieces makes this issue available through the lower levels of Mint State. The copper- and yellow-gold surfaces of this MS61 specimen exhibit above-average striking detail, including relatively strong definition in the letters of DOLLAR and the date digits, elements that are often weak. There are fewer contact marks than what would be expected for the designated grade. Prominent clashmarks are visible over both sides, a typical characteristic of this issue. Ex: Eric P.
