||1847 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. According to the Garret and Guth reference, in recent years "the issue [29,814 coins] has finally become appreciated for the rarity that it is. Low-grade examples are scarce, but the date becomes even more difficult to find in higher states of preservation." In fact, NGC reports only six coins in MS61 and eight pieces finer (8/14). Light green-gold color and reddish hues embrace each side of this lustrous representative. Sharply defined design elements show traces of incompleteness over the eagle's left (facing) leg and neck feathers. A few copper alloy spots occur throughout, and a small tick on the eagle's beak is noted for accuracy. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
