1851-O $20 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Variety 2. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Struck during a period when gold coins circulated extensively in the South, the 1851-O double eagle is a rarity in Mint State. Still, the issue was produced in sufficient quantity (315,000 pieces) that circulated examples can be easily obtained for date collectors. This example shows pleasing green-gold patina with hints of apricot luster in the protected regions. NGC notes old cleaning, though the appearance is hardly affected, and the surfaces are pleasingly void of major abrasions. The few years that double eagles were produced prior to the opening of the San Francisco Mint saw the heaviest mintages from the Louisiana branch, and as such these issues are the only readily collectible O-mint double eagles in the series. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $75.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
