||1857-S $20 AU50 NGC. CAC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The San Francisco Mint struck nearly 1 million double eagles in 1857, most of which were distributed throughout the banking sector or placed into circulation in California. However, more than 5,000 examples were included in the large gold shipment set aboard the S.S. Central American, and these account for the majority of Mint State examples known to collectors. This piece, and the following, were considered among the finest extant until the discovery of shipwreck pieces. Many collectors find these to be more desirable, in that they were acquired in the 1940s yet are still remarkably well-preserved. The present coin is lightly circulated, but exhibits excellent visual appeal. Radiant original mint luster in the recesses attractively highlights rich bronze-gold patina overall, while high-point wear is minimal and the surfaces are unusually smooth for the grade.
