||1861-O $20 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Only one die pair was used to strike the 17,741 coins minted, making it difficult to determine which coins were struck under the authority of the federal government, the state of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. Doug Winter (2006) posits that examples with a strong date and an obverse die crack from the rim above star 2 toward Liberty's chin were likely struck under the auspices of the Confederate States government. His hypothesis is based on a comparison between the proportion of times such coins appear at auction (20%) and the reported percentage of coins struck by the Confederacy (17%). While this piece shows a weak date and lacks the diagnostic die crack, it remains highly desirable. The devices are typically incomplete, and myriad abrasions are scattered over each side.
