||1880 $20 -- Scratches -- NGC Details. Unc. According to Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: "The mintage for the 1880 double eagle [51,420 coins] is greatly reduced from the Philadelphia mintages of the issue for the previous years. It is predictably scarce in all grades." Vibrant luster graces the medium yellow-gold and distinctly prooflike surfaces, and the design detail is typically bold for the date. Delicate hairlines are lightly strewn over each side, and a few pinscratches in the upper-obverse fields account for the Details designation. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
