||1881-S $20 AU58 NGC. CAC. Double eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint in 1881 amounted to a paltry 2,199 coins, and the New Orleans and Carson City Mints refrained from production of the denomination entirely. Conversely, the San Francisco Mint produced 727,000 pieces, and this issue remains the most plentiful overall for date collectors. Mint State examples can be found, but are frequently heavily abraded, grading no finer than MS62. This AU58 representative, however, retains bold honey-gold luster and essentially complete detail, and exhibits remarkably few abrasions of note. An excellent CAC-approved date representative.
