Denomination Ducat
Description Ferdinand I Posthumous gold Ducat 1565, Fr-48, Huszar-896, Kremnitz Mint, MS64 NGC. Struck in the second year of the reign of Maximilian II, this ducat is quite remarkable. The devices are almost fully struck, and the fields are exceptional; bright and prooflike. The flan appears to have the slightest of waves, unusual for this issue where creases are quite common. Ferdinand died in July of 1564 and this example was struck in 1565 along with the first ducat issues of the new Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian II, perhaps using up remaining obverse dies with titles of Ferdinand. This example is the only 1565-dated example we have been able to locate with a search of auction records spanning the past decade. Realized $7,050.00. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
