1773 1/2P Virginia Halfpenny, No Period MS64 Brown NGC. N. 3-F, W-1455, R.4. 105 grains. The standard Virginia design depicts King George III facing right, with the coat of arms of the House of Hanover on the reverse. This example lacks a period over the King's head, and has seven harp strings on the reverse. The preponderance of Mint State examples in recent auctions suggests that this variety was part of the Cohen hoard of 1869, a large cache of Virginia halfpence estimated to number over 2,000 pieces. Both sides of this sharply defined example have complete borders, although with narrow dentilation at the lower obverse and upper reverse. The fields of this light brown example are prooflike, with hints of light blue toning, and traces of original mint red on the reverse. Both the obverse and reverse dies are unique to this variety.
