Description 1788 COPPER Vermont Copper, Mailed Bust Right, Struck over Irish Halfpenny Fine 12 NGC. RR-28, Bressett 21-U, W-2215, R.6. This coin is struck over an Irish halfpenny from the early 1780s, although the exact date is unknown. The harp strings are faintly visible on the reverse. This variety is one of the rarer die pairs in the Vermont series, with an estimated 50 survivors according to Tony Carlotto, or 17 to 32 per Dave Bowers. A prominent bisecting obverse die crack undoubtedly explains the rarity of the variety, as few could have been struck from that die. This tan and olive-brown example has pleasing surfaces that show microscopic granularity on the reverse. Otherwise, this is an exceptional, problem-free Vermont copper. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $3,055.00. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
