1787 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Draped Bust Left AU53 NGC. M. 24-g.3, W-3070, R.6. 143.5 grains. Three varieties are identified for obverse 24, and two varieties are known for reverse g.3. The others are 24-g.5, 24-FF, and 17-g.3. As offered here, Miller 24-g.3 is rarer than any of the others. A few scattered planchet flaws are evident, with trivial handling marks. A nicely centered strike results in complete legends and a full date. The lower obverse and upper reverse are indistinct. We have seen other examples with a similar degree of weakness at different locations, suggesting a batch of tapered planchets. The Eric P. Newman copper is finer than any of the others we have seen, and far outshines the rough Fine example in the Ford Collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
