1787 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Draped Bust Left, ETLIR XF45 NGC. M. 33.17-gg.2, W-3635, R.3. 134.3 grains. The obverse is paired with reverse dies r.1, r.5, and gg.2, while the reverse is also matched with obverse 33.31. Dr. Thomas Hall's attribution number, 33-13/G.2-2, is painted in the left obverse field in the hand of William Wallace Hays, with the distinctive letter 'G' matching his round collector card. A planchet flaw is noted over the head of the seated figure on the reverse of this tan, olive-brown, and steel example, with otherwise smooth and highly attractive surfaces. Ex: William Wallace Hays; S.H. Chapman; Hillyer Ryder; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. The S.H. Chapman envelope has the notation 'No. 294' that purports to be an auction lot number, but there is no sale from that catalog where lot 294 is a Connecticut copper.
