1787 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Draped Bust Left, AUCTOBI AU53 NGC. M. 39.1-ff.2, W-4215, R.5. 145.1 grains. Dr. Hall's white edge paint is visible on this piece. Obverse 39.1 is known with reverse dies h.1 and ff.2. Reverse ff.2 makes appearances with obverse dies 36, 37.11, and 39.1. This is a scarce variety, and rarely found in grades approaching this example. The 1975 Pine Tree-EAC sale had a VF piece, as did Perkins and Ford. The Taylor and Norweb sales each had coins that graded Fine. The ANS has a single VG example from the Barnsley Collection. This light olive example from Dr. Hall's collection has traces of maroon patina with a few planchet flaws. It is undoubtedly a Condition Census example. Ex: Dr. Thomas Hall; Virgil Brand; Brand Estate (sold for $7.50 on May 18, 1935); B.G. Johnson (sold for $10.00); Eric P. Newman; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
