Description 1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Goiter variety VF25 NGC. M. 37-f, W-5155, R.4. 148.2 grains. Called the Goiter variety for the heavy die break at the horse's throat. The reverse die was used in combination with obverse dies 50, 49, 48, and 37, in that order. Since obverse dies 49 and 50 are both dated 1788, the Maris 37-f was backdated, and actually struck in 1788. The late die state reverse has a crack extending upward from the shield cud, reaching the first U in UNUM. This example falls at or slightly below the low end of the Condition Census, but it is still among the 10 finest known pieces. Myriad planchet flaws and post-production marks are intermingled on both sides of this olive-brown example that shows traces of steel and maroon patina. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $1,527.50. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
