1788 1C Massachusetts Cent, Period MS62 Brown NGC. R. 16-M, W-6410, R.5. This rare variety was missing from the Norweb and Ford sales. The Taylor Collection had a VF coin and the American Numismatic Society has one graded XF. Only a few others are known, and the present piece is one of the three finest examples, although a side-by-side comparison will be necessary to determine the exact rank. A few traces of raised verdigris appear on the chestnut-brown surfaces of this lovely Massachusetts cent, showing dappled steel toning on both sides. Splashes of maroon patina are noted on the reverse of this lustrous piece. Ex: B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Mary Cruzan; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
