Description (1688) TOKEN American Plantation Token, HB REX AU58 NGC. N. 1-A, W-1130, R.7. 130.2 grains. An analysis of this example of the Newman 1-A variety shows 97% tin, 1% copper, and 2% trace elements. The American Plantation tokens have a distinct and unusual characteristic as the only British coins to carry a Spanish denomination. British attempts to limit the circulation of Spanish coins in the American colonies were unsuccessful. Finally, the Plantation tokens were issued with the denomination of 1/24th real. A second example of the rare Newman 1-A die combination, this piece is light to medium gray with some brown tints on its still partially lustrous surfaces. Minimal corrosion (sometimes called tin pest) is noted on each side. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $8,812.50. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
