Description (1688) TOKEN American Plantation Token, Transposed Arms VF30 NGC. N. 2-G, W-1140, R.7. 133.4 grains. An example of the Newman 2-G variety, this piece is composed of 95% tin, 3% copper, and 2% trace elements. The Spanish Eight Reales coins were divided into smaller pieces known as bits, with eight bits to the dollar. The 1/24th real required 192 coins to equal the Piece of Eight. The original coiners of these pieces noted that they had the sterling equivalent of a British farthing. An engraving blunder resulted in the Transposed Arms variety with the harp in the eastern quadrant on the reverse. Only about 10 to 12 examples of this classic variety are known. This piece has considerable deep steel patina on its light gray surfaces, with minor surface marks and a few faint scratches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $8,812.50.
