(1688) TOKEN American Plantation Token MS61 NGC N. 5-D, W-1160, R.6. 137.6 grains. The composition of this Newman 5-D variety example is 97% tin, 1% copper, and 2% trace elements. Eric P. Newman wrote in his 1964 article: "At least three-fourths of all 1/24th real pieces in collections are restrikes of combination 5-E." However, there is no known example of 5-E, and the comment was clearly intended to mean variety 5-D. The present piece is probably a restrike, but that is not certain. The trace of copper as part of the composition may be responsible for the champagne overtones on this lustrous gray and bluish-steel example. Microscopic granularity is the rule rather than the exception for these important pieces. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
