1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Fine 15 NGC. Betts-306, Adams PBvl 3-B, R.5. After receiving a letter from Vernon stating he would return to Cartagena after receiving reinforcements in Jamaica, Spanish Admiral Don Blas de Lezo responded, "In order to come to Cartagena, the English King must build a better and larger fleet, because yours now is only suitable to transport coal from Ireland to London." Blas de Lezo is depicted on one knee, proffering his sword to a standing Admiral Vernon on this piece. Though well circulated, this specimen retains a pleasing level of detail and attractive chocolate-brown color with brassy highlights. Tiny areas of corrosion are present, though not distracting.
