Elizabeth, (New Jersey) - Borough of Elizabeth March 25, 1790 1 Penny Newman page 266, Fr. NJ-219, Wait 526. PCGS Very Fine 20. This and the following several notes acted as "paper coins," and comprise one of the interesting subtopics in the Colonial Currency canon. A typeset penny change bill printed on thick paper, a style shared by several issuers from New Jersey and New York. Ornamental borders are on both face and back. The face has "Aaron Ogden. Clk." engraved. The back shows the denomination and small ornaments flanking: a lobster and a skull and crossbones. The imprint of S. KOLLOCK is at the bottom. This example has honest, modest wear and is in above average condition for the series and type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
