North Carolina December 29, 1785 20 Shillings Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-214. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. The genuine 20 shillings from the last series of North Carolina notes is rare, and it is unpriced in the Newman reference. The counterfeit is also difficult to obtain. This is an interesting two-sided printed series with a vignette at the left on the face and the copied Thomas Davis imprint on the back. The 20 shillings vignette is an intricate version of the angel Gabriel blowing his trumpet while atop a church. The plate diagnostic that exposes this counterfeit is the final period under the "v" instead of the "Se" in "Seven" in the preceding line. Noted with some "Stains," but a solid note. This is the first counterfeit of the type we have cataloged in our sales. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
