Description Virginia May 4, 1778 Printed Date $1/3 Thin Paper Fr. VA-142a. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. The May 4, 1778 Printed Date notes were printed on two types of paper: thin laid paper and thicker rag paper. A two-letter control system at the upper left of each denomination commenced with this series. This thin laid paper example is bright from the face with full margins. Signed by Wood. The Virginia trampling Tyranny vignette (with the spelling of the motto corrected to TYRANNIS) on the Printed Date notes from the series is different from the previous Handwritten Date note. Noted are "Edge Splits and Tears," typical to this fragile paper type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $258.50.
