Description Continental Currency February 17, 1776 $1/2 Fr. CC-21. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent. The February 17, 1776, small denomination notes with Benjamin Franklin-designed motifs on both sides are fascinating and popular. The face has the Fugio design with the sundial and MIND YOUR BUSINESS used on the Continental dollars, and later, the 1787 Fugio coppers. The backs correspond to the coin designs with WE ARE ONE in the center encircled by AMERICAN CONGRESS, with a glory of rays around. These elements are all surrounded by a chain with links bearing the names of the original thirteen colonies. The smaller vertical format notes with this design have an excellent layout that makes them distinctive from other Continentals. These "Fugio" notes should be considered fractional Continental dollars. The notes were printed on 24-subject sheets with a double-pane of twelve, using three letter positions per each of four denominations. This is an interesting plate B example with a popularly collected Ben Jacobs signature. Noted are some "Minor Stains," or more appropriately, foxing patches that are more noticed on the back. Always in demand by collectors. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $587.50.
