United States of America - Continental Loan Office in the State of "Massachusetts Bay" Exchange for $36/180 Livres Tournois Fourth Bill, Payable at Paris September 25, 1780 Anderson-Smythe US-98-5A. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. A choice condition Massachusetts Livres Tournois certificate in a style similar to others in the Continental Loan Office series. Printed on laid paper, watermarked "United States 4." 21.0 cm by 10.0 cm. The common layout has black typeset titles, obligations, and denominations, with blanks for issuance across. Ornamental bordering is at right. The indenting design at left and the area along the top, including the denomination and serial block, are printed in orange. No. 2585. Issued to Jonathon Glover, countersigned by Nath. Appleton for Massachusetts Bay. Signed by Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson as the "Treas'r of Loans," engraved and printed in orange. Endorsed on the back. This is also a perfect type representative for the Livres Tournois certificates, with a strong Hopkinson signature. Examples from Massachusetts are comparatively available. Noted with "Small Edge Repairs," but only one is readily noticed from the back on the top central edge split. Bright and well margined. Ex: Eric P.
