United States of America - Continental Loan Office in the State of "New York" Uncut Pair of Exchanges for $120/600 Livres Tournois Third and Fourth Bills, Payable at Paris June 2, 1779 Anderson-Smythe US-100-8A. PCGS Very Fine 30. This vertical pair represents a half sheet of New York Loan Office Livres Tournois certificates. The First was likely redeemed, the Second destroyed, but these remained. Rarely seen as a multiple. The general style is similar to other Paris certificates. Printed on laid paper, watermarked "United States 3" and "United States 4." 21.0 cm by 19.0 cm. The common layouts have light green typeset titles, obligations, and denominations, with blanks for issuance across. Light green ornamental bordering is at the right. The left and top are printed in black. The indenting design at left and area along the top, including the denomination and with serial block, are printed in black. Nos. 815. Issued to Abraham Brinckerhoff (signer of September 2, 1775, New York currency) and countersigned by Dirck Ten Broeck for New York. Signed by Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson as the "Treas'r of Loans," engraved and printed in black. Each is endorsed with Brinckerhoff's signature on the back. A magnificent pair. New York certificates are much scarcer and rated Low Rarity-6 in Anderson-Smythe. Problem-free with modest handling, bold color and two sharp Hopkinson signatures.
