Description United States (of America) - Sum of Contract Certificate ("Quartermaster's Form") at "Haverstraw...New York" $275-1/2 March 1, 1780 Anderson-Smythe US-124. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. A very rare and unusual certificate that was not in the Boyd Collections or several others we researched while writing this section from the Newman Collection. Though these are referred to in Anderson-Smythe as "Quartermaster's Forms," they may have been used for civilian purposes as well. Printed on laid paper with the left side imprint "Philadelphia, Printed by F. Bailey" mostly visible. 19.0 cm by 9.8 cm. Contained within ornate bordering, the obligation text across is mostly in italics. At the top, CERTIFICATE is centered, the serial number is at left, and space for the numeric denomination is at right. Blank space was left for for use, issue, date, location, and state. No. 136. Issued to Jacob Wood, signed at Haverstraw, New York. High Rarity-7 in Anderson-Smythe (4-6 known) and the first we have cataloged. Noted with "Small Edge Splits; Minor Stains." However, sharply printed and with significant embossing remaining. Although difficult to estimate precisely due its great rarity, this certificate appears to be worthy of significant competition among specialists. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $1057.50.
