State of Massachusetts Bay - (Act of December 6, 1776) Bounty Note Ten Pounds Jan. 11, 1777 Anderson-Smythe MA-5. PCGS About New 50. A superb example of this engraved "Ten Pounds" denomination Bounty Note. Printed on laid paper. 16.5 cm by 19.2 cm. This partly printed form had spaces for the date, serial number (slightly to the left in brackets), and payable date. The ornamental frame has wide bordering for the left end indent. Concealed [BOUNTY NOTE] is in the center of ornamental rows. An embossed stamp is at the center. No. 4115. Issued and signed by Cooper, Appleton, and Gardner (pen cancelled). Payable December 6, 1780. An endorsed interest notation is on the back. There are variants from this series. The serial number position is slightly left, but the serial number runs after the assigned range by Anderson (greater than 3,000), making it technically a hybrid, perhaps MA-5A could be assigned. Although normally encountered in Fine grade with splits, this About New example is stunning. With light handling only, broad and full size. Another premium Newman Collection example and among the finest seen by us. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
