Description State of the Massachusetts Bay - (Act of October 13, 1777) 6% Treasury Loan Certificate due March 1, 1781 149 Pounds 16 Shillings Dec. 1, 1777 Anderson-Smythe MA-10. PCGS Very Fine 30. This bond is a third, major type, from the complex "Sword in Hand" emblem series. The due date changes, and the obligation is simpler. Although the due date is earlier than MA-9, the authorization date is later, explaining its placement in Anderson-Smythe. All have the written date, "Dec. 1, 1777," to our knowledge. Printed from a Nathaniel Hurd plate on laid paper. 20.5 cm by 23.0 cm. The overall layout is similar to MA-8 and MA-9. At upper left, encircled by a rattlesnake, a standing patriot with sword and "INDE/PEND/ENCE" scroll is encompassed by the Latin motto ENSE PETIT PLACIDAM SUB LIBERTATE QUIETAM. Intricate floral bordering is on three sides, and a double-line frame is at the top. The left end is indented as issued. Roman font obligations (as one paragraph) are across with spaces for the date, serial number, denomination, issuee, and signatures. "Treasurer" (bottom right) and "1777" (upper right) are engraved. An embossed stamp is on the text portion. No. 750. Issued and signed by Scollay, Price, Boyer and Henry Gardner (pen cancelled). A red diagonal interest endorsement is at right on the face, and the back has a docketed endorsement interest payment on the edge. The plate printing is lighter for this issue. Exceptional, without faults, and rarely encountered like this. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
