Description State of Massachusetts Bay - (Act of October 13 & 22, 1777) 6% Treasury Loan Certificate due March 1, 1782 20 Pounds 16 Shillings May 28, 1778 Anderson-Smythe MA-12. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This series of loans used different classes, and had a new size, layout, and vignette cut by Hurd. The upper left features a pine tree, another iconic Massachusetts emblem. Printed from a Nathaniel Hurd plate on laid paper. 23.5 cm by 15.5 cm. At the upper left is a pine tree reminiscent to that used on the backs of "Massachusetts Codfish" notes engraved by Gill and Fleet; encircling is a rattlesnake as used on the "Sword in Hand" style bonds by Hurd. MASSACHUSETTS, facing outward, is engraved in the indented left end margin. There is no class type in the right margin. The bottom ribbon border has a counterfeit warning. Differently detailed borders are at the sides, and a single frame line is along the top. The Gothic title has lovely flourishes. Texts and obligations are across with blanks for issue, amount, date, and serial number. As previous, there is an embossed stamp in the text. No. 2690. Issued and signed by Scollay, Price, Boyer and Henry Gardner (pen cancelled). Another premium example from the Newman Collection. Full sized, untrimmed and bright, with nicely balanced margins and left indent cutting. Noted only with "Hinge Remnants on Back; Minor Stains." A vibrant and solid example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $399.50.
