PCGS About New 50 Apparent. These small size forms, referred to as "Army Certificates," served to rectify overdue compensation for service in the American Revolution. Since the Colonial paper money was worthless, these certificates could be redeemed for the equivalent currency due, and pay interest from a specified date; they usually were payable for taxes and other state government obligations. In a way, they acted as retroactive loan forms. Printed on laid paper. 14.0 cm by 8.5 cm. The ornamental bordering is wider and indented at the left. The typeset obligation had blanks for issuance. No. 108. Issued and signed by Montfort and McCulloch. Not endorsed on the back. Low Rarity-6 in Anderson-Smythe. The type was not in the Boyd Collection. The "Paper Toned" deeply, as noted by grading. High grade and an interesting army-related fiscal paper. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
