Confederate States of America -T38 1861 $2 PF-1, Cr. 286. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Among the most interesting of the Confederate types. Although this looks like a June 2, 1862, series $2 note, the first for the Confederacy, it is not. Thinking it was part of the 1861 enactment, Blanton Duncan, in Richmond, engraved the September 2, 1861, date on the initial plate and printed approximately 36,000 notes on a ten-subject plate before creating new plates with the proper date. A distinctive issue, and not often seen in high grade. These early notes were needed for small change and circulated heavily. In the manner of the Virginia state seal with Virtus trampling Tyranny, the central vignette represents the Confederacy attempting to vanquish the Union. The oval vignette in the upper left corner shows Judah P. Benjamin, the former U.S. Senator who later became a member of Jefferson Davis's cabinet. This is Benjamin's first appearance on Confederate currency. Plate position 5. The note is well framed, and only some "Mounting Remnants on Back" are cited by grading. This example has superior eye appeal to the other Newman Collection example we sold in Newman Part VII for $1,175, also graded PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Ex: Eric P.
