Description Bowen-Congreve Patent Back Color Tint Essay. "Patent Congreve Check Plate" with "BANK" across in Red and Black 1833. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. The first of the eight proof backs is red and black, each richly printed and contrasting superbly. The circular orange die with the patent title around overlaps and bisects the large BANK. The letters are composed of red tops and bottoms with a black strip across the center. At bottom right, the small imprint is: DESIGNED AND ENGRAVED BY ABEL BOWEN, BOSTON. At bottom left, in miniscule text is: "Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1833 by Abel Bowen in the Clerk's office of the District of Massachusetts". A small "5" is between the text and imprint. A significant back, and used on the cited Newman Part VI: Lot 19132 Specimen note from the Norfolk Bank.
