Bowen-Congreve Patent Back Color Tint Essay. Congreve Patent Check Plate in Green and Brown Undated (Ca. 1833). Proof. PCGS Choice New 63 Apparent. The third back has three dies across in brown, green and white, with a mesmerizing op-art impression. The center die has the encircling title with a glowing green die in the center. At the ends, the dies have a spoked effect. Green accents are at the corners and in between the dies. The minute text, different from the previous two, and appearing at bottom center, reads, "office of the District Court of Massachusetts," (but the "s" from "Clerk's" remains, indicating the rest of the text seen on the previous two examples was obliterated by lathe work). A small "6" is to the right, and further right, the Bowen imprint. The style was used on the backs of the Nahant Bank $2 notes. Noted with a "Small Hole at Left of Center" and "Mounted on Woodblock." Another fabulous contrast of color. Ex: NASCA, T. James Clarke Sale, June 26-29, 1978, part of lot 2050; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
