Bowen-Congreve Patent Back Color Tint Essay. Congreve Patent Check Plate with "FIVE" across in Orange and Black Undated (Ca. 1833). Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is the fifth back, and fits into a quartet of back proof essays with a large FIVE across. Overlaid on an intricate orange pattern featuring floral flourishes and stacked end dies. The oval die that bisects the FIVE is solid black in the center, as are the oblong lozenges at the ends. Its frame is in different patterns, as are the FIVE and the arced and corner black accents. CONGREVE/PATENT/CHECK/PLATE is subtly placed in the orange tint, with overlapping arced strips at top and bottom. The Bowen imprint is at bottom right, but there is no additional text or number. A choice example and noted as "Mounted on Woodblock." Ex: NASCA, T. James Clarke Sale, June 26-29, 1978, part of lot 2050; Eric P.
