Bowen-Congreve Patent Back Color Tint Essay. Congreve Patent Check Plate with "FIVE" across in Black Undated (Ca. 1833). Proof. PCGS Choice New 63 Apparent. This is the sixth back and fits into the quartet of back proof essays with a large "FIVE" across. Only the plate with the black portions was used. As above, the oval at the center and the oblong accents at the ends are solid black at the center, while the bisected FIVE, corners, and arced strips are in patterned black and white. Most of CONGREVE and PLATE appear, but PATENT and CHECK would have been on the second plate. Without the text, small number, or imprint at the very bottom. Noted as "Paper Toned; Minor Paper Scuffs" and "Mounted on Woodblock." An important developmental essay in the Congreve Patent process. Ex: NASCA, T.
