Bowen-Congreve Patent Back Color Tint Essay. Congreve Patent Check Plate with "FIVE" across in Orange Undated (Ca. 1833). Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. This is the seventh back and is part of the quartet of back proof essays with a large "FIVE" across. An essay for the orange portions only, and the counterpart to the previous example. The intricate pattern features floral flourishes and corner dies. The bisected FIVE, center oval, end lozenges, and arced strips are outlined by the orange tint, as are PATENT and CHECK. With careful scrutiny, CONGREVE and PLATE can also be observed in the tint. The Bowen imprint is at bottom right, but there is no additional text or number. Noted with "Paper Toned; Paper Scuffs" and "Mounted on Woodblock." An important developmental essay in the Congreve Patent process that forms a superb trio with the previous two examples.
