Gainesville, AL - Bell & McMahon $1 June 15, 1865 Rosene 104-7. PCGS Choice About New 55 Apparent. These notes were issued shortly after the Civil War's end, most likely by planter Turner Bell and warehouse keeper Asher McMahon. This lithographed note features a stag ensconced within the title, denominations and counters. The imprint of David Walker & Bro. Stationers & Lith. 4 Park Place, N.Y. is at the bottom. There is a faint red ink circular stamp (similar to a postmark) dated AUG 15, 1865. The noted "Mounting Remnants on Back" do not detract from the lovely face. This is the first $1 note we have cataloged from the series. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
