Fort Smith, AR - E. S. Mitchell, Redeemed at Doaxville [sic] and Boggy Depot, C.N., by J.P. Kingsbury & Co. 50 Cents May 1, 1862 Rothert 236-8. PCGS Very Fine 35. This is a rare and fascinating Fort Smith note from E. S. Mitchell that was also redeemed at the Cherokee Nation in the adjoining Indian Territory under Confederate control at the time. Printed on brown rag paper like the previous example. A pattern border is all around and the typeset text is within. FIFTY CENTS is across the center, and the upper corners have bolded "50" counters. The Cherokee Nation payable clause is across the top. Note "Doaxsville" is a plate error as the proper spelling is "Doaksville." An important Indian Nations issue and the Rothert plate note. Very desirable as the plate note with the Newman Collection provenance. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
