Description Tallahassee, FL - Territory of Florida $1 June 12, 1830 Cr. T8 Benice 6. PCGS Very Fine 35. The notes from this territorial series have always been popular. A very scarce note from the second series printed from the engraved plates by N. & S.S. Jocelyn, New Haven. Among the Criswell-Shull listed Southern States issues, it is quite distinctive due to its early, 1830-period dating and engraved style. At top center, Hebe is standing with an eagle drinking from cup; she holds a jar in her other hand. Washington is shown at the left end in a small circle; at the right end, an outlined ONE is upon a vertical lathe panel. Note the low serial number 13; however, Ron Benice interestingly comments that there were seven number 1 notes known to him when he published his book. The exact rarity of Florida Territory notes in collectors' hands is difficult to determine, but approximately 20-40 notes of each denomination are known. The overall quality of this Newman Collection $1 note is superior for the technical grade. The back is endorsed by the auditor, and the interest paid shows to the left end of the face. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $3525.00.
