Description Atlanta, GA - Undecipherable Private Issuer 50 Cents Oct. 27, 1862. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. This is an extremely rare issued scrip note, not in the Dorris Collection. The unusually designed scrip format was used for two others in his collection: Akins & Co. and Bearden & Co. The issuer name is different than those, faint, and mostly undecipherable. It might be [G.] B. L[evick]. Confirming the correct name would require more exhaustive local research. The odd style has a perpendicular wharf scene showing two sailors with commercial goods and an anchor on a wharf. An archway with various symbolic elements is in the background. The obligation is noteworthy including the clause "...or the common currency of the Country," which we have not observed on any other scrip form. Ornamental panels are at the ends. Grading notes "Edge Tears; Adhesive Residue on Back." The Dorris Akins & Co. 50 Cents realized $1,057.50 in our January 2015 FUN auction. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $270.25.
