Description Illinois - Lot of 2 1850s Contemporary Counterfeit Banknotes. Both counterfeits copy Danforth, Wright & Co. plates, but pale in sharpness to the genuine. A well-matched pair with the false notes perhaps by the same counterfeiters. Belleville, IL - Bank of Belleville $2 Feb. 20, 1856 IL-30 C4. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. Drovers are at top center. The note has a crooked imprint line and fuzzy details. Grading notes "Mounting Remnants on Back; Small Edge Tear at UL." Bloomington, IL - Lafayette Bank $5 Nov. 4, 1859 IL-65 C6a. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The Newman Collection has the extremely rare genuine bill of this type cataloged in this sale for comparison. A wagon scene and slaves are at top center. Better made than the previous, but with numerous tells. The counters are impossible to replicate well. Noted with "Small Edge Tear at Top Center; Internal Tear at Right." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.) Realized $129.25.
