Lafayette, IN - Treasurer of the City of Lafayette 5 Cents Nov. 25, 1862 WVS 361-1. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. A municipal note whose obligation and vignette complement one another. An exciting scene of a Civil war era horse-drawn steam fire engine is at the lower right and noted in the text is, "on account of Steam Fire Engine" (similar to text used on the City of Fort Wayne loan scrip in this sale). At upper left is a portrait of the mayor, Thomas B. Ward, and two engraved signatures are at the bottom, one being his (at right). Notes like this met critical change needs and could raise funds for the public need, such as fire safety. Countersigned on the blank back and fully issued. Noted with "Small Internal Splits." A classic scrip note from the period. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017).
