Davenport, IA - Burrows and Prettyman $1 Sep. 26, 1857 Oakes 30-1. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. A rare and interesting note from this private issuer. The partners issued a large circulation, perhaps the reported, $100,000 at its peak. Most notes seemed to have been honored at the time as we have observed relatively few survivors. Property was sold during the 1857 panic to redeem remaining notes. Engraved with a banknote style by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson. A plowing scene is below the arced title, and a red ONE protector is across. A Native American princess' portrait is at left. Grading notes: "Edge Splits and Damage; Hinge Reinforced; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back." This is the first $1 note from the issuer we have handled. Ex: Eric P.
