Topeka, KS - Union Military Scrip $1 June 1, 1867 Whitfield 421. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. The lowest denomination from this Civil War-related issue. This series was printed by the Continental Bank Note Company and features many dramatic vignettes. Kansas Arms are at the upper left. In the central vignette, a diaphanously clad female allegory, representing Hope and Peace, holds an olive branch as a dove rests on her hand. Ironically, she leans on a menacingly large cannon pointing towards the ocean. The long obligation specifically notes the use of the scrip to pay participants in "the Price Raid in 1864" and "Indian Expedition under Gen. Curtis..." later that year. Not cancelled, issued specifically for participation in the Price Raid and wide margined. An available series that meets with continuing popularity. Ex: Eric P.
