Description Colony of New York February 16, 1771 5 Shillings Fr. NY-161. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This interesting series used denominations from 5 shillings to 10 pounds. Despite intricate designs, the series was heavily counterfeited. Elisha Gallaudet cut the top and left border, and the Arms at lower right. Hugh Gaine printed the series on thin laid paper. On all but the 10 pounds, the NEW YORK in the left border cut faces upward. "V. Shillings." is perpendicular at lower left, "V.S." is horizontal to the left of the Arms, and 5s is above the counterfeit warning. Grading notes "Splits, Tears, and Repairs; Stains; Small Holes." In average condition for the type, but very collectible. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. From Newman X (Heritage Auctions, November 2018), lot 20388, realized $168.
