Description Woods Hibernia halfpenny, 1723. These coins were struck under contract from the British government by William Wood between 1722 and 1724. Their purpose was to supply much needed copper coinage for Ireland. When they were partially demonetized in 1737, many were sent to the American colonies for use there. The hole is drilled through the portrait of the King. The chisel(?) strikes nearly obliterate Britannia on the reverse. The defacement suggests a Nationalist political protest. Purchased from Victor Clemente / Rocky Point, New York, USA. (Fb. 14, 2018) ($8).
