Many of the English football clubs competing in the Premier League had affiliations with either one side or the other during the Troubles, particularly in the 1960s and 70s. London's Chelsea Football Club was closely associated with Loyalism as evidenced by their ties to the UVF and UDA and their common use of Loyalist symbols and slogans on club banners, flags, and other paraphernalia. The date of the coin, 1971, was among the most active years of the Troubles counterstamping craze, but was also the year that Chelsea won the European Cup Winners finals in Athens. This coin may have been a nod to either or both. Purchased from Stewart K. / Buckhurst Hill, Essex, UK. (Jl. 20, 2022) ($6). |
