I've had these WAR stamps, PI-68, 69, 70, 71, listed in the uncertain category for a long time as the message is unclear. After adding a fourth example recently I've decided to list them with my regular collection.
There's a distinct possibility that the word is just that; a reference to the centuries long ?Irish Question?. I don't believe they're someones initials or an acronym representing an organization or political agenda, but a reference to the actual war between opposing factions to determine the future of Ireland.
All are now classified as Nationalist issues and labeled as Pre-Irish Independence coins though some are clearly not from that era. In addition to the four in my collection, I'm aware of two other examples, one on an English coin and one on an Irish coin.
The meaning of the LH initials on the 1914 English Penny is unknown to me. |
