1811 1C S-287, B-1, R.2, MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Our EAC Grade MS62. A few small splashes of maroon patina appear on the distinctly olive-brown surfaces of this splendid Gem cent. Considerable bright orange mint luster remains on both sides. Such luster is rarely seen on the Classic Head cents. The uneven strike creates bold details at the center and right peripheries and weakness along the left-side stars and legend. Variety: The sole die variety for the 1811 Normal Date cents. This early die state example lacks die bulges, breaks, or clash marks. Population Data (3/15): The 13 Mint State 1811 Normal Date large cents at PCGS include three MS65 Red and Brown, one MS65 Red, and one MS66 Red and Brown. Heritage Commentary: This piece is tied for the fifth finest in Del Bland's Condition Census with a grade of MS61. Bill Noyes said MS65 and tied for finest known in his 1991 early cent reference, lowering the grade to MS63 and second finest in his 2005 Census. Provenance: Henry C. Miller (Thomas L. Elder, 4/1917), lot 812; Henry Chapman; Col. E.H.R. Green; Burdette G. Johnson (St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.); Arthur C.
